Evidence for syntactic competition in the acquisition of tense and agreement in child French

چکیده
1 The proposal In many languages, children around the age of 2 make certain systematic errors in their verbal forms. They produce both non-finite root forms (NRFs) and finite forms in contexts where finite forms are required in the adult language. This is often referred to as the “optional infinitive (OI) stage” (Wexler 1994, 1998). For example, young children acquiring French as their native language produce sentences like (1a,b) where the verbal forms are non-finite and non-adult-like (e.g. infinitival ouvrir ‘to open’, and the past participle form assis ‘sat down’ instead of the adult forms j’ouvre ‘I (will) open’ and the compound past tense est assis ‘has sat down’ respectively.

An Optimality-Theoretic Model of Acquisition of Tense and Agreement in French
We present a novel theoretical model of multiple stages in the acquisition of tense and agreement in Child French. First, we show that tense and agreement inflection follow independent courses of acquisition. Over the three stages of development attested in the data, tense production starts and ends at near-adult levels, but suffers a “dip” in production at the second stage. Agreement develops ...
متن کاملTask-Specific Artifacts of Parametric Properties in English as a Second Language Acquired by Persian-Speaking Learners
This experimental study investigated the learners’ integrative acquisition of obligatory overt subjects and subject-verb clause agreement in English as an L2. In L1 acquisition research, correlations between superficially unrelated linguistic phenomena are analyzed in terms of integrative effects. For instance, in English L1 acquisition, there is evidence for an integrative appearance of subjec...
متن کاملAcquisition of Tense by Persian and English Speaking Children Between 2 to 4 Years Aged
This research is case study which was designed to investigate the acquisition of tense by Persian and English speaking children between 2to4 years aged. Four girls were precisely analyzed in order to figure how the tense of verbs is effective in their speaking that learners need to succeed in their daily lives. The subjects were randomly selected to study and the matter of gender was not consid...
متن کاملEarly Child Grammars: Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis of Morphosyntactic Production
This article reports on a series of 5 analyses of spontaneous production of verbal inflection (tense and person-number agreement) by 2-year-olds acquiring French as a native language. A formal analysis of the qualitative and quantitative results is developed using the unique resources of Optimality Theory (OT; Prince & Smolensky, 2004). It is argued that acquisition of morphosyntax proceeds via...
متن کاملNative-like Event-related Potentials in Processing the Second Language Syntax: Late Bilinguals
Background: The P600 brain wave reflects syntactic processes in response to different first language (L1) syntactic violations, syntactic repair, structural reanalysis, and specific semantic components. Unlike semantic processing, aspects of the second language (L2) syntactic processing differ from the L1, particularly at lower levels of proficiency. At higher L2 proficiency, syntactic violatio...
